What is Murano Glass?

What is Murano Glass? Murano is a very high quality glass made in Italy and specifically on the island of Murano. The history of Murano glass is quite extensive, dating back to the 7th century. Murano glass was initially made in Venice, but because of the fire hazards of making glass in such a populated area, the industry was moved to the island of Murano in 1291.

These glass makers were held in very high esteem. One reason was because they were the only artisans able to produce mirrors at that particular time. Glass makers became so important that they were actually allowed to marry blue blood. On the other hand, they risked execution or getting their hands cut off if they tried to leave the island and set up shop elsewhere!

There are many Murano Glass Shops around the country. You can find it used for making vases, dinnerware, figurines, wine bottle stoppers and other types of art glass.

In particular, when one pose the question, "what is Murano glass", I think of it in terms of how it's used to produce handmade ethnic jewelry. Many handmade Peruvian jewelry designs incorporate Murano glass into their jewelry creations. The bracelet, above, is done with silver wire and Murano glass. Available also are necklaces and earrings available in my store, Jewelry, Jewelry Online, where you can find handmade ethnic jewelry from around the world. Be sure to take a peek. With the growing interest in art glass, Murano glass is taking a prominent position within the jewelry industry.

And, of course, many Italian jewelry designs incorporate Murano glass into their designs.
