Victoria Falls Attractions

Victora Falls Pictures

The Victoria Falls Attractions are one of the many things to see in places in South Africa. I just had to post some pictures of Victoria Falls, being that they are so beautiful and receiving an email inspired me to do a little more research on the Victoria Falls Attractions..

As I enjoy writing about these exotic places and speaking to the people from the areas, I often receive actual "magic gemstones" in my email. This one, from my friend from "places in South Africa" reads........."I see you have a picture of Victoria Falls. This is on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia. Since I was born in Zimbabwe I have visited the falls. It is one of the seven wonders of the world.

The mighty Zambezi river gently flows a mile wide through Africa and suddenly flows over hard basalt rock. Linear fault lines where the river carved a gorge which zig zags down the river over several miles. He even gives me a history of Victoria Falls!) ..."The first European explorer David Livingston discovered them in 1855 remarked with this famous saying,

"Scenes so wonderful must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight"

He named the falls after Queen Victoria. They are amazing with a 5,500 feet long curtain of water plugging vertically into a gorge 390 feet deep. You view the falls right in front of you because the water flows 90 degrees along the gorge at the bottom. Therefore, you can walk almost the entire length of the falls from the Zimbabwean side and cross over the famous railway bridge to the Zambian side to see the last quarter. They offer Victoria Falls bugee jumping from the bridge into the gorge and Victoria Falls white water rafting downstream. One of the most spectacular white water rapids in the world is one of the main Victoria Falls attractions.

I have been there when there was a drought with such a little water I could look over the edge and see the bottom with ease. But mostly there is approx. 2,201,400 U.S. gallons per second of water falling over it. In fact it's such a volume of water dropping that it forms a spray of water that rises from the 390 feet drop right out and falls back to earth like rain. There is a natural rain forest of thick vegetation which has grown from constant rain and another Victoria Falls attraction. You can see the spray from 20 miles away. It makes such a noise that the local Africans called it Mosi-oa-tunya (the smoke that thunders). The falls are also still natural and unspoilt as they would have looked thousands of years ago.

When you are here, if you want to see wild animals they are in South Africa, but if you plan to visit the Victoria falls that is right in a game reserve and not far away you can go on a Victoria Falls safaris to see elephants, rhino, lion, buffalo, zebra, buck, crocodiles, hippo etc. You can also take one of the day tours to see the traditional Zulu dancers with their spears and shields. Visit the townships to see how the poorer African live and maybe go to Lesotho. Lesotho is a small African country landlocked by south Africa but has it's own people and language. A day trip there with a guide takes you through the spectacular sani pass. Climbing to an altitude of about 6300 feet and zigzagging beneath towering cliffs, buttresses, past waterfalls and unique flora and bird life to the highest pub in Africa. Experience the culture and custom of the people of Lesotho with a visit to the basotho mountain village. I am sure you will find some different jewelry there.

This is summer in the southern hemisphere and our schools close 1st December and reopen 16th January. Many companies close over Christmas as well and therefore it's the holiday season. Visiting during this time will attract higher prices.

Regards,

Graham
