Uses of Topaz

topaz mineral

There are many uses of topaz as there are topaz colors. The topaz birth stone is for the month of November. It is the symbol of love and affection. The topaz mineral has a vitreous luster and is very slippery to the touch. The major source is Brazil, but it also comes from Sri Lanka, Australia, Burma, Russia, the British Isles and the USA.

Above is one of my favorite uses of topaz, and that is as a carving in these unique Chinese designs. The Chinese do these hand carvings and incorporate them into necklaces and bracelets. If you would like to see more of these designs, visit my store Jewelry! Jewelry! Online!

As I've been searching for unique handmade ethnic jewelry from around the world, these are some of my favorite designs. After carving the flowers, they hang them from macrame' cording. They do these, not only using the topaz mineral, but also use the commonly named gem, Jade stone (which is actually, nephrite.) Both are beautifully done and look much better in person. And they are so reasonably priced!

I am really interested in providing an outlet for this handmade ethnic jewelry since it is not only fun for me, but many people in underprivileged communities are able to increase their quality of life by selling their wares. I have a hard time understanding why we don't use this avenue more often when helping other countries. Every third world country have their own unique handicrafts available for us to purchase. They are reasonably priced, high quality goods. But instead of buying them, we are buying the junk from rich Chinese manufacturers. It just doesn't make sense. So, in my own little way, I am searching out these artists, myself. It's not that easy to find these people, though. If anyone has any ideas, please contact me, and I apologize for getting off the track. More about the topaz mineral......

Topaz Colors

There are so many topaz colors. There is the transparent yellow, yellow-brown, orangy brown, and pinky brown. Rarer is a very light to medium red, light green, greenish yellow, violet and colorless. Although blue topaz is popular, much of it is treated. For more information on treating gemstones, click here.

Dark blue topaz is rare and valuable. Topaz is becoming so popular that many people are opting for blue topaz wedding rings. White topaz jewelry is pretty and is a nice substitute if you can't afford a diamond. LOL. Pink topaz has mystical properties. I have a smoky topaz necklace that I made long ago and still wear. I often buy smoky topaz beads or bricholettes. It's one of my favorite gemstones to work with in my jewelry making. Yellow topaz rings can be very valuable, especially if it is the coveted "Imperial Topaz (below)."

Assessing the Topaz Mineral

Topaz often comes with inclusions and, of course, the fewer the inclusions and the cleaner the stone, the more valuable it is. If you see words like Rio topaz, Maderia topaz, Spanish topaz or Palmeria topaz, they are actually citrine and prices should be reflective of citrine, not the topaz mineral.Uses of Topaz Uses of Topaz - Home
