Serpentine Mineral or "New Jade" Gemstone
The serpentine mineral, often called "new jade" is so named after a snake because it looks so much like the reptile's skin! It is often passed off as jade, and although it is a beautiful stone, it looks nothing like jade, jadeite or nephrite. An example of serpentine is seen in the photograph (above) where it is incorporated into this
handmade Peruvian jewelry.
It is found in the regions of New Zealand, China, South Africa, Italy, England and USA. The best quality of a serpentine gemstone has fine textures with no cleavages. Other than the green color shown, it is also available in red, brown-red, brown-yellow, mauve, gray, golden yellow, black and white. Serpentine beads are found in two forms, one is translucent and other is opaque. These beads are a good substitute of jades in the jewelry industry. Serpentine beads are often used in cabochons, carvings and for making jewelry as gemstone beads. In the rough serpentine beads, there is a silky feel. After polishing, these beads get an attractive touch and these attractive serpentine beads are used in prayers and meditation.
