Mining Malachite began as early as 4000 BC by ancient Egyptians. These semi-precious gemstone are often used for tumbling, jewelry and figurine carvings. Malachite cabs are popular and often set in sterling silver. It is one of the gemstones used in many native American Southwestern jewelry designs and often intermixed with other gemstones.
Azurmalachite is a mixture of malachite and azurite. It's a really pretty, dark blue stone used a lot in jewelry making.
Amazingly, there are manufactured malachite gemstones which is odd because there is already an abundant supply of these gemstones. They are from Russia and indistinguishable from the actual stone.
Malachite is found in the Eliat stone which is the national stone of Israel and also called the King Solomon stone. There is a lot of interesting history surround this stone and, of course, lots of handmade ethnic jewelry indigenous of Israel.
In the Middle ages, malachite was worn to protect from black magic and sorcery. In Ancient Greece amulets for children were made of malachite. Malachite is said to aid in the regeneration of body cells, aiding in one’s sleep. It creates calmness, peace and tranquility. Used to detect impending danger, malachite gemstones are believed to lend extra energy, ward off danger, and increase knowledge, patience and harmony in one’s life.
