Jewelry Making Guide
This jewelry making guide is the start of a discussion about the various jewelry making techniques from around the world. Included within this guide, I will add some of the techniques I've done myself. Around the globe, jewelers and crafters are doing amazing things with metal, gemstones, glass, and hundreds of other materials. From every corners of the world, these crafters are producing remarkable pieces of "wearable art". There are numerous unique jewelry making techniques coming from
India,
for instance. One of the Indian jewelry designs is actually "top secret" and protected by the Indian government. It is called Thewa Jewelry and for more information about this jewelry type,

Obviously that's one technique we won't be able to learn. All my life, I have been researching throughout the entire world to see what they're doing within the art of jewelry making. I become quite impressed when I explore the creativity of these artists from around the world. By using the treasures found in their geographical areas, natives put together pieces of wearable art, resulting in unique pieces that exploit the distinct personalities of the area. If you need a jewelry making guide and are thinking of getting started with the art of jewelry making, let's hope I can help you! Use the contact form below if you are interested in learning how to make jewelry and you have any questions or ideas. As I've probably already impressed upon you, jewelry and the art of jewelry making is a very extensive topic and it's hard to know where to begin. I couldn't hazard to guess how many various techniques there are to making jewelry. I will start out, though, by giving you an introduction to starting a jewelry making business, in case that may be your area of interest. I will be offering these different techniques in step by step jewelry making and the incorporate information about the various materials used. This jewelry making guide includes jewelry making basics. For more in-depth information, there are many entire books available. Whether you are interested in jewelry making for fun or jewelry making for profit, it doesn't matter because even if you are doing jewelry making for profit, it's still fun! You can easily start a jewelry making business with a few beads, some type of string or cord and a couple of tools. I have found out through the years that jewelry definitely sells! During the best of times and during the worst of times, people can purchase a little bauble here and there and it makes them feel special. That is one theory about why it seems to sell so well. There's always some type of jewelry one can afford to buy in order to create a brand new look. Also included in this jewelry making guide are many book recommendations (listed below) to get you started if you are interested in selling your jewelry. Included is a book on E-bay which many suggest is the number one way to make money online! If you've never sold on E-bay, there are many tricks of the trade and it is definitely worth taking a look. I, myself, find E-bay a little stressful, but that's me. Many people have made a great living by using their services. You can sell jewelry at craft shows, flea markets or anywhere else. You can take your items to gift or beauty shops and sell it there.
There are are hundreds of jewelry making techniques; maybe even thousands! You can just simply do jewelry stringing beads or go a little further and maybe crochet the beads into a bracelet using wire and bead jewelry making techniques. Or maybe you would like to take thicker wire, bend that into shapes, add beads and advance into wire and bead jewelry making. You can also start making wire wrap jewelry. This is the simple process of wrapping a gemstone, a shell, or anything you please and producing a pendant.
Maybe you just want to forget the beads altogether and just take thick copper wire, pound on it, shape it and get into copper jewelry making. You can cast metals. You can solder metals. You can make fire glass (chinese lampwork beads) or porcelain beads. The list goes on and on and each one is an art in itself. As my site grows, I will provide a a different jewelry making course for each technique I have mastered.
Hemp Jewelry Making Instructions
A good place to start this jewelry making guide will be to talk about hemp jewelry making instructions (hemp jewelry pictured left) since that was my first attempt at the craft. When I sold my first hemp macrame necklace back in the seventies for $3, I was ecstatic and truly hooked on jewelry making! The only hemp jewelry making supply needed to make a piece of jewelry is some type of string, rope or cord. Beads are actually optional! That's it! They have fancy little boards to hold your string while you make knots, but I just use a safety pin. You can produce the most adorable little bracelet, necklace or anklet in a matter of minutes! Not bad! In order to make hemp jewelry, you need to learn how to macrame, which is nothing more than tying knots. If you can tie your shoe string, you can macrame'.There are lots of books with hemp jewelry making instructions and you will need one for learning to tie the basic knots. Many of these books are available from Amazon and can be purchased below. There is also lots of information available online. The first thing you need to learn is
how to tie a square knot.
Once you can tie a square know, all the other knots are just a variation of this basic knot. Did you ever notice when you buy a dress with a sash tied on it and the knot is neat and the sash hangs beautifully. When you try to do it yourself, it probably doesn't look the same, right. That's because they tied it using a square knot. So from now on, tie your sashes, belts, etc. in this way.
Featured in the jewelry making guide is this necklace which can be easily made. The only jewelry making component you need is a couple of beads and some rope. There aren't even any special knots to learn. This jewelry making guide will offer a free jewelry making idea here and there and hopefully a jewelry forum in the near future. There are many costume jewelry making supply companies. One of my favorites if Fire Mountain Gems. They are good for everything except their sterling silver is very high. If you need sterling silver, mine is much less expensive. Contact me if you need sterling silver. I placed an order and for some reason was sent pounds and pounds of it. Instead of sending it back, I just paid for it. Therefore, it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and sell it to people who need some. I have Bali beads, spacers and toggle clasps at a fraction of the prices I've found at Fire Mountain or anywhere online. For anything else, contact But getting back to Fire Mountain Gems, the more you buy the cheaper everything gets. You can find an online catalog at
Fire Mountain Gems
and they will also mail you a beautiful full-color catalog for free. There are zillions of jewelry making supply companies online. All you have to do is Google it! I like Fire Mountain because they have everything, but I'd still look around for the silver. They have it, but I repeat...I don't like the prices. Jewelry making with beads is probably the simplest and a good way to start learning. It is definitely a good way to learn about the various materials and supplies in jewelry making. Plus, you will start gaining experience in jewelry making design. You can always buy a beaded jewelry making kit, but I like being more creative and coming up with a design of my own. Still, a beaded jewelry making kit can get you started and then you can expand from there. Here is a book with a kit included. Everything you need to get started is right included. When I'm into stringing, I guess one of my favorites is Swarovski crystal jewelry making. I love to mix the Swarovski with gemstones of the same color. What a beautiful contrast. Add some Bali sterling silver for jewelry making and you have the richest looking jewelry piece. I can learn to do anything from reading a book, so if you are like that, here are some more books I'm offering you. There are many techniques for designing and putting the clasps on the end of your string. When you're stringing beads, that's the only difficult part. These books are a great help! My first little free jewelry making idea of which involves wire and bead jewelry making. All you need is a spool of wire, wire cutters and some beads. Get some pencils, wooden spoons, medicine bottles, etc. Anything round and with various diameters. Wrap the wire around the objects until you have some coils. Take your wire cutters and cut the coils every three loops so you have a bunch of spring rings that are different sizes. Now you are just going to connect these together until you have a long necklace that you can slip over your head! But wait! You're not done yet! Well, you CAN just simply leave it at that, but you probably want a little color. What I do is take the coils and cut it with only one loop. I take a bead and put each end of the wire into the bead holes and glue it securely. Now what you have is an entire circle with a bead attached. Now all you do is intermittently connect the beads in-between your spring rings. Add as many or as few beads as you want. And that is the first design of my bead making course in my little "jewelry making guide"! The second design is a
Beautiful Crocheted Lariet
that you can easily make if you know how to crochet. Crochet jewelry is awesome because of the "messy" look of it. I say "messy" because I can't think of a better way to put it. I used to not like it because of that extremely handmade look it has, but now with "handmade" being "all the rage", they look really fashionable! I also use wire crochet jewelry making when designing beautiful
bracelets. (Click for Instructions)
Like I said, there are so many jewelry making techniques and I'll be continuing to update this Jewelry Making Guide as I find the time. Here, I am going to randomly list some of the processes I will eventually discuss. When I get more in-depth, there will be pages to click on. The lost wax process of jewelry making is a fascinating art. You take a piece of wax and carve it. That is the beginning of your design. With the wax, you make a mold and then cast the piece in the metal of your choice. It is probably the most involved and expensive type of jewelry making. You need TONS of equipment, but wow, is it worth it! I am supposedly taking a class soon on making lamp work beads. You need a little equipment for that process. The most expensive thing is the kiln, although you only need a small one. They are about $200. Another thing you can do is tumble your own rocks. That is the lapidary process of jewelry making. Rock tumblers are only around $100 for something decent to get you started. It's another magical technique when you "pop in" rocks and "pop out" magic gemstones!
