I guess when we're discussing handmade ethnic jewelry from around the world, we can't forget about handcrafted Swarovski Crystal Jewelry from Austria. I, especially would have an interest in it since I have been a crystal seller of Swarovski for years. When I get loose Swarovski crystal beads in the mail, you would think I received a shipment of diamonds. And that's what they look like to me. I can't wait to get them. I put them in their own little plastic compartments and try hard to collect every color. Daniel Swarovski founded a company at the end of the nineteenth century with the aim to cut crystals automatically. They initially worked with the production of optical products, abrasives and grinding tools, the cutting of crystals and the manufacturing of decorative stones made from crystal. Not only was the loose Swarovski crystal used in jewelry, it was also used in chandelier parts.

Swarovski became extremely popular when we started seeing it in Hollywood and especially on the runways. That started way back in the seventies, but the designs are still going strong.

In 1973 the company produced a paperweight and a key ring as memorabilia for the 12th Olympic Winter games in Innsbruck. I like the story about the designer, Max Schreck, who accidentally started a new product line when he built a little mouse out of crystal chandelier parts. I'm sure you know what happened after that. It was designed by artist Andr� Heller and takes you into a land of imagination, beauty and fun. It is an awesome park and is landscaped with waterworks, a labyrinth and spectacular lighting.

The Mardi Gras necklace pictured above is another piece of handcrafted Swarovski crystal jewelry that I sell a lot of. It can be worn with so many things because of all the colors in it. I sell this in 20", 24", 30", 36" and 40" lengths. Some people like to buy three for four and wear them altogether. Also, the long ones can be wrapped around a couple of times, so you can have one long necklace or a couple of short ones. This necklace can also be made in solid colors, of your choice, of course.
