If you’re looking to do some Afrocentric shopping, be prepared to have the time of your life! Throughout the world, ethnic groups are characterized and identified by their clothing and distinctive jewelry and that goes double for Afrocentric designs. There are so many colors shapes and sizes of this fine jewelry indigenous of the African culture, it’s difficult to know where to begin. One of my favorites is the Berber jewelry. Unsuspecting colors with fabulous magic gemstones pull together the most beautiful creations. The Berbers are from Northern Africa and they have their own specific style of jewelry. They use lots of silver, glass and and enameling in their jewelry. My favorite is the berber bracelets from Algeria. Massai is another Afrocentric Jewelry design that truly depicts the culture out of all the things in Africa. Sporting bright colors and intricate patterns, these Afrocentric designs are made from local raw materials including seeds, skins, copper, bone, gourd and wood. As with many cultures, the bead work demonstrates the woman’s social understanding, creative capability, and even her marital status. Women buy bright beads from non-Maasai and use them to make distinctive jewelry. Rules dictate which colors may be used and in what combinations. The Zulus, also of South Africa are known for their baskets and beads. Beadwork is a well-developed Zulu craft. If a woman has, or would like, a relationship with a particular man, she can send a subtle message to him through her jewelry. Zulu basketwork is much admired, too. Baskets are even watertight enough to hold liquids, thanks to the tight weave and to the fact that the liquid in the baskets causes the fibers to swell. Here are a couple of little tid-bits about African handicrafts. While doing some Afrocentric shopping, be sure to look at handicrafts using raffia in their designs. Raffia combined with other materials was, at one time, used to denote something good. It is still used today in many African ceremonies to ask the gods to bring good things. If you ever hear the term “bin bins", it means beaded jewelry. For a larger selection of African Jewelry, go to my store

These earrings are the epitome of Afrocentric shopping, as they are so authentic and ethnic looking. They will go perfectly with your Afrocentric clothing as well as looking wonderful with your jeans or other outfits. They are hand carved, so their shapes are a little irregular. No two earrings are exactly alike. These designs are made by craftsmen in underprivileged communities, so you're really helping out the natives by purchasing them. They are inspired by the actual natives who lived in the jungles of long ago. The tribes of Africa had nothing else to work with but wood, bone, seeds and the fruits of their land. They made these earrings themselves for something to wear. Now we can show how unique we truly are by wearing jewelry patterned after the tribal art designs of so many years ago! Some have a little carved pin that goes through your ear. Others use the back as part of the earring design. When I wear them, people always ask how I got them in my ear. They think I have a huge hole in my ear because of the illusion they give. And, amazingly, I get compliments from people as old as my grandmother, who loves them, and young teens go crazy for them, as well. They are an absolute attention getter. Caution: Do not wear these if you are a wallflower! Just click on whichever ones you want. And shipping is free during my Grand Opening!
